WP4 Challenge-based learning labs

In this work package we will create a handbook for organising a NRL focused Learning Lab with variable themes and executes applied in practical courses. By providing hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of NRL implementation in various contexts and ecosystems, FutureLand Learning Labs contribute to raising awareness of the importance of nature restoration. The Learning Labs serve as innovative learning environments that strengthen working life competences. Through collaborative learning methods, students from each country will engage in challenge-based learning alongside regional stakeholders. Emphasis on innovation and practical aspects aims to foster collaboration among participants and prepare them to navigate the complexities of implementing the NRL in diverse contexts.

The created Learning Lab model can be utilised after the project has ended, either partially on in their entirety, in higher education teaching.

The handbook will be published on this website once it is completed.

Current progress

During the first year of the project, partners have jointly developed the initial pedagogical concept and implementation principles for the FutureLand Learning Labs. Preliminary plans for the Learning Labs in Venice, Girona and Joensuu were presented and discussed during the Reflection Workshop in Girona in June 2026.

The Learning Labs will build upon the competence framework, webinar series and educational resources developed in earlier work packages. They will provide students with opportunities to address real-world restoration challenges in collaboration with regional stakeholders and experts.

Preparatory work for the FutureLand Learning Lab handbook has also been initiated.

Future Learning Labs

Three international Learning Labs will be organised during the project:

• Venice Learning Lab (Italy)
• Joensuu Learning Lab (Finland)
• Girona Learning Lab (Spain)

Each Learning Lab will focus on nature restoration challenges in a specific regional context while applying a shared pedagogical approach developed within the project.

FutureLand partners exploring a restoration site in Catalonia. Field-based learning and real-world challenges will form a central part of the FutureLand Learning Labs.
